ABSTRACT

The study investigated the Psychological needs of HIV/AIDS patients in Edo State using University of Benin Teaching Hospital as a case study. Survey and descriptive research designs were used to select the sample for the study because the population of the study comprises HIV/AIDS patients in the outward unit of the hospital. The sample size was 154 and the sample percentage was used to analyze the research questions. The findings revealed that most HIV/AIDS patients have psychological needs and these needs affect their healing process, their families and also societal structures. The findings also showed that HIV/AIDS patients are stigmatized and discriminated in the society hereby affecting them negatively. This study recommends social workers to organize a seminar on the major causes and means of transmission of this disease which include unsafe sexual practice, transfusion of contaminated blood, using unsterilized tools and mother to child transmission. Social workers within the University of Benin Teaching Hospital are playing a major role in reducing the risk and psychological needs of these patients within the hospital through their extensive counselling and accurate facts and knowledge about HIV/ADIS and it's available treatment. Schools should include HIV/AIDS topics in their syllabus to help the young generation in clarifying the wrong perception of HIV/AIDS and also enlighten them on the causes and means of transmitting this disease.
