THE PROBLEM OF TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE IN NIGERIA SECONDARY SCHOOLS: A CASE STUDY OF OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the problems of teaching English as a second language in junior secondary school in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State. In chapter one, the researcher talked basically about the introduction of the problems of teaching English as a second language in junior secondary schools, and also five research questions were raised during the course of the research. And also, in chapter two, the researcher gave the review of related literature, concerning the topic. Furthermore, chapter three of this study talks about the methodology the researcher used in gathering data. This consist of the research design, here the survey research design was adopted, also the population of the study, which was made up of sixteen public junior secondary schools English teachers the approved case study. The researcher also talked about the sample/sampling procedures, where by the researcher made use of fifty percent of the total number of junior secondary schools and sixty percent of the total number of English teachers in the junior secondary schools. The research instrument used was the structured questionnaire, and the test-retest method of reliability was used by the researcher. And also the method of data analysis used was the simple percentage and tables. Lastly, after the collection of data, chapter four is presentation of results and discussion of findings. Here the researcher analyzed the results she got using the simple percentage and tables, and she also interpreted the results below each table representing each research question, and as well discussed her findings after returning from the field survey. And in chapter five, the researcher, gives a brief summary of the entire study, talked about her conclusion and also gave her recommendations in line with the significance of the study in chapter one, and lastly suggestions for further studies.
