ABSTRACT

This research examines the linguistic features of stand-up comedy in Nigeria using a Nigerian comedian Bovi as a case study. This study describes how stand-up comedians use language to stereotype and mimic individuals from a pragmatic standpoint.

This research gives a descriptive analysis of stand-up comedy in Nigeria, thus, the research method of this study is qualitative. Brown and Levinson's politeness theory is adopted in describing the linguistic features of stand-up comedy in Nigeria.

This study discovers how comedians employ politeness principles such as positive politeness and off record strategy to lessen the face threatening acts of the individuals they stereotype or mimic.
