ABSTRACT

This research is a pragmatic study of myths in Yoruba. It is aimed at explaining the mysteries of the world and offer moral lessons or guidance for individuals and communities. The research focuses is to seek to analyze the ways in which Yoruba myths are used to convey meaning and messages in different social and cultural contexts. Data for the study were elicited from component native speakers of the language within the age range of 50-80 years. These informants were interviewed and recorded with the use of a recorder. Published and unpublished works served as the secondary mode of data collection. The theoretical framework adopted for the study is conversational Implicature proposed by Paul Grice 1975. Findings in the study revealed that context and cultural knowledge play a major role in interpreting and understanding Yoruba myths. In conclusion, the study reveals that selected myths perform certain didactic functions and that the functions are revealed through a careful exploration of the prevailing context.
