ABSTRACT

This research is an appraisal of newspapers and the practice of investigative journalism in Nigeria. This work was born out of the need to know whether the print media is effectively practicing investigative journalism in Nigeria. It aimed at finding out the extent to which it is practiced, the various journalistic genres in which investigative stories appear and the kind of investigative stories given attention. The two theories on which the study is anchored are the agenda setting theory and gatekeeping theory. The research employed content analysis as its research design, coding sheet as its research instrument and systematic random sampling as sampling technique. The sun and The Nation newspapers were content analyzed. Consequent on the analysis, it was discovered that, investigative reports are inadequate. The study therefore concluded that the print media do not pay ample attention to investigative journalism in Nigeria.
