ABSTRACT
This research project lays out the analysis of the sounds of the Ikale dialect of the Yoruba language. The aim and objective of this work was to identify, establish and analyze the functional distinctive sounds in the Ikale dialect. In carrying out this research work, the Ibadan four hundred word list of basic vocabulary was used to source for data from native, competent speakers of the language. The phonemic analysis of the Ikale language is the focus of the work and it points out the sounds that are potent to cause meaning difference in a similar pair of words.
In this research, I examined the sound system of Ikale including information on the syllable structure and tones. The result of this research has implications on the status of Ikale, which primarily aims at creating an open ground to further study of the language.
