ABSTRACT
There has been renewed interest in the fate of endangered or dying language by linguists and scholars interested in language study. The death of any language means the extinction of a cultural heritage and at times, the loss of a people more than ever before, languages that were once self sufficient find themselves under intense pressure to integrate with invaders often leading to loss of their own languages and even their ethnic identity.
The pressure on language can be economic, social, cultural, religious, political, military or any contribution of these. The Edo language has show to be affected by all these factors.
This research therefore seeks to find out the state of the Edo Language and various the dimensions of language endangerment. We shall also be looking at the sociolinguistic implications of this problem with a view to providing suggestions for linguistics revival and revitalization.
