ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate the perspective of elite football athletes on the influence of VAR on the development of sport by using Bendel insurance football team as case study. Four research questions were raised to guild the study and the random sampling technique to select 50 football athletes which was drawn from Bendel insurance football team, Benin city. The research instrument used in collecting data for this study was the questionnaire using the four – point scale of Agree, Strongly Agree, Disagree and Strongly Disagree. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple percentage. It was reviewed that elite football athlete believe that VAR has helped optimize football performance and has helped reduce foul plays and other players respondents. The introduction of VAR in match officiating has also helped improve the accuracy of the match by reducing the number of incorrect calls made by referee. It is also seen that VAR has no significant challenges among elite football. Four key recommendations were made. Firstly, football governing bodies should prioritize refining VAR implementation by addressing technical issues, streamlining the review process, and enhancing communication between on-field officials and VAR operators. This approach aims to minimize disruptions and optimize decision-making efficiency. Secondly, there is a need for greater standardization and consistency in VAR protocol application across different leagues and competitions. Clear guidelines, criteria for reviews, and comprehensive training for officials and  athletes are essential to promote uniformity and fairness in officiating decisions. Thirdly,  enhancing transparency and communication surrounding VAR decisions is crucial for building trust and credibility among athletes, teams, and fans. Football authorities should consider providing more detailed explanations of VAR rulings, including video replays and audio communication with on-field officials, to ensure clarity and understanding. Lastly, athletes should receive thorough education and training to adapt their playing style and strategies to the presence of VAR. This includes understanding VAR implications, managing emotions during reviews, and maintaining focus and discipline on the field. These recommendations aim to improve the integration of VAR in football, fostering a more efficient, fair, and transparent officiating system.
