ABSTRACT
The study examined the perception of undergraduate’s students in the University of Benin towards abortion in Nigeria. The objective of the study was to find out students perception, knowledge and attitudes on induced abortion depend on the different background factors such as age, religion, sex and area of upbringing; to find out students believes and attitude towards abortion; to know if undergraduates students supports that abortion should be legalized in Nigeria; to know how the level of received education relate with the level of knowledge and students perception toward abortion. The survey research design was adopted for this study. Consequently two hundred 200 copies of questionnaire will be distributed to students of the University of Benin. Data collected were analysed using frequency count, percentages, and mean with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0. The empirical result revealed that students’ perception, knowledge and attitudes on induced abortion depend on the different background factors and that majority of the respondent gave a positive response on most statements including that abortion is considered a problem facing young girls today. The study recommends the federal government as a matter of urgency to consider legalization of abortion to prevent the practice of abortion in the back street or corner by unqualified medical doctors or quacks given the prevalence of unplanned pregnancies and the fact that many girl tend to face the challenge of deciding about the outcome of their pregnancy during their reproductive period. The study also recommend the importance for young women to focus on building their careers and that Parental upbringing should inculcate sex education as well as providing basic needs of females.
