ABSTRACT

The emergence of the  Covid-19 pandemic took the world by surprise, causing great economic, social, cultural and political disruptions in countries around the world. Countries and governments around the world, made concerted efforts to curb the spread of the virus which have claimed millions of lives globally, by implementing preventive measures which includes the successful creation of Covid-19 vaccines. Despite the fact that vaccines, in the form of effective mass immunization programs, have saved millions of lives and improved health and wellbeing throughout the world, historically, such successes have been continuously contested by a minority, yet a sizable portion of vaccine-hesitant individuals and groups for a variety of environmental, cultural, political, and psychological reasons.

This study assessed perception of compliance with Covid-19 vaccine on students in the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Benin, Benin City. Three research questions were raised for the study. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised of 3781 undergraduates, from which a sample of 150 respondents were selected. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results showed that majority (more than 60%) had not taken the Covid-19 vaccine and more than half indicated unwillingness to take the vaccine if offered.  Also, out of those who had taken the vaccine, about one-tenth took it because it was needed for official purpose. Furthermore, it was revealed that majority of the respondents (87%) believed Covid-19 is real and majority (75%) had information about the Covid-19 vaccine from official statements/Press release.
