ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the perceive influence of social media on students’ academic performance. To make this possible three research purpose was raised to find out the influence of social media on Uniben academic performance, determine the reasons for using social networking sites among students and to investigate the factors responsible for the increased usage of social media among University of Benin Students?
Descriptive survey research design was adopted to accomplish the objectives of the study. The population of the study consists of fourty four thousand, six hundred and ninety nine (44,699) undergraduates in university of Benin and the sample size of one hundred and fifty (150) students was used for the study. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. The reliability coefficient was 0.81 was obtained using Correlation Coefficient Index. The data collected were analyzed statistically using the statistical package of social sciences (SPSS) software.
The study revealed that social media has influence in student academic performance. The findings of this study revealed the reasons for using social networking sites among Uniben students, it shows that student could spend long hours on my social media accounts without getting bored the study therefore recommend that Nigerian government and educational agencies should encourage and sponsor the publication of books relevant to internet use for undergraduates. - Contents of internet surfing need to be monitored by parents, internet service provider and telecommunication regulators.
