SUMMARY

This work examined the role Nigerian Ports Authority and the development of the Nigeria economy, by first looking at the historical background of the Nigeria Port Authority; how its started operations in April 1955 following the implementation of the Ports Act of 1954traditional roles in the economy and later to how colonial rule and its policies affected these roles. This research work went further to examine that from 1962 - 1968, under the Nigerian Development plan, the length of quays was expanded and additional warehouses and cargo handling equipment were added. The study maintained that the NPA in the past thirty year has contributed to the economy of the Nigeria State. However, the study interrogated how the NPA, create job opportunities, provides alternative mode of transportation, generates revenue, accelerates the rate of urbanization, exerts huge multiplier effects on the economy and promotes international peaceful co-existence amongst Africa nations.
