ABSTRACT

Petrochemical waste is one of the leading causes of environmental degradation in Nigeria, especially in the Niger-Delta region. Consequently, the phenomenon has breeded a lot of rections. Militancy in Niger Delta has been viewed by many scholars as a social and moral response to environmental degradation. This work has examined Helon Habila’s Oil on Water as a novel that extensively addresses the issue of environmental degration by exploring other social factors lined with it. The work has examined the theory of ecocriticism to justify its analysis. Data for the work was extracted from the novel which served as the primary text. Secondary sources of data included journal articles, books and other scholarly opinions from puvlishable sources. The issue of environmental degradation was considered from two distinct perspective: social perspective detailing the role of locals in fueling the violence in the region and secondly, a neo-colonial perspective that looks at the role of the western world in degrading the envirionment and seeking a recolonization of the African people through economic and political suppression.
