ABSTRACT

This research work examines the Necessity for Adaptable Abortion Laws in Nigeria to promote sexual and reproductive justice. This research work examines the scope and nature of abortion in Nigeria. It further examines the laws that regulate abortion in Nigeria. It observes that restrictive abortion laws open up more people to the risk of unsafe abortion as a large number of abortions take place despite the law. Unsafe abortion is one of the greatest dangers to women’s reproductive health and causes of the high rate of mortality in the female adolescent population. The study concludes that the grounds for the legality of abortion in Nigeria are rather compelling to the rapid growth of maternal mortality and morbidity within the country since the State is not obligated in any way to permit access to health care services to women who seek to carry out safer abortion procedure for a pregnancy they feel not to carry to term. Thus, the liberalization of the Nigerian law on abortion will be far more advantageous to society than when left highly restricted only to instances where it may only be executed if the life of the mother is at grave risk. The research recommends the need for proper education about the harmfulness of abortion under unsafe circumstances. Most often couples are unaware of the aftereffects of abortion, particularly hemorrhage, uterine perforation, and sexual dysfunction, so proper awareness, training, and guidance sessions should also be given to the people who are involved in abortion.
