ABSTRACT
The study aimed to comprehensively describe the nature of the lateral lisp. The lateral lisp is a type of speech defect which affects the /s/ , /z/ and /t/ sounds. It is most commonly found in children compared to adults. The research profers a plausible solution to the speech defect which can be seen at the end of the chapter.
The questionable negligence lateral lisp and other speech defects in general have received forms. Some of the reasons why this study has been carried out without forgetting to mention that the researcher himself has a lisp.
Three subjects, were studied including the researcher. Consequently, data containing the /s/ and /z/ sounds were collected from the subjects through the voice recording device. Although that was not to be the case for long as they soon got to find out that they were being studied.
The case study theoretical framework was adopted. This framework falls under the descriptive research and also involves the use of subjects for a particular case. This particular framework is arguable the best for this kind of research as the research involves a not so common case (lateral lisp) and subjects to be studied.
He research reveals quite a number of things. Among them is the result of the speech sound production when the sounds appeared in different positions. Also, the /t/ sound’s ability to help shapen a good /s/.
Finally, like every other speech defect, a lisp should not be overlooked. Early treatment is the key.
