ABSTRACT
It is the goal of this work is to investigate the nature of Inflections in Edo Syntax, as they manifest in Edo which is a kwa language spoken in the southern part of Nigeria. This work investigates the nature of inflections in Edo with emphasis on the tense and number agreement patterns of the language.
The framework employed is the Principles and Parameters framework. The various manifestations and characteristics of the inflectional features have been looked into based on the roles they play in sentential derivation. The method employed in data collection comprises of a synchronic sentential constructions drawn from the standard variety of Edo and so on.
The nature of inflections in Edo syntax focused on the tense and number agreement relations of a sentence and also looked at the various ways that they are realised in the languages. Inflections express one or more grammatical categories with a prefix, suffix or infix or another internal modification. Inflections are also the modification of words to express different grammatical categories.
The study concluded on the note that the INFL phrase in Edo houses materials which are verbal in character showing the major components of the Edo INFL and also the INFL category whose member include a finite auxiliaries which are inflected for tense, agreement and the infinitival particle.
