ABSTRACT

This study examines the National languages in Nigerian, with special focus in the Nigeria Pidgin English. The primary data was gotten through questionnaire administration. With a view to drawing some generalizable conclusions regarding the use of pidgin among Nigerian university students and the place of Pidgin in the quest for a national language in Nigeria; the sample consisted of students from different departments and faculties, all from the University of Benin, Ugbowo campus. By analyzing data elicited from 53 male and 38 female students of the university, the study found that students converse freely with Nigerian Pidgin English other than the Standard English, as a result, it was discovered that the use of Nigerian Pidgin English has come to stay in our institutions. However, it was also found that the constant use of Pidgin English has not contributed positively to students’ academic performance, rather on the contrary. Majority of the respondents, however, accepts that Nigerian Pidgin should not be made the national language for Nigeria. It was recommended, among others, that Nigerian Pidgin should be taken through all necessary processes of standardization, codification and modernization, in order to gain more prestige and win better recognition in all quarters.
