ABSTRACT
This study explores the pervasive mythical elements within Clement Odia's Bekekele, shedding light on the intrinsic connection between the metaphysical realm and the human experience. Employing the functional myth theory as a guiding framework, the research delves into the functions of myth i specifically its roles in imparting moral teachings, influencing social conduct, and upholding societal order. The theoretical foundation places significant emphasis on Bronisław Malinowski's functional myth theory, illuminating the diverse roles myths play in uniting communities, offering psychological solace, and preserving cultural identity. The perspective on mythology is investigated, underscoring the intricate fabric of African belief systems and their profound impact on the cultural milieu. The thesis posits that Bekekele, functioning as a spiritual voyage, provides a glimpse into the realm of myth by depicting interactions between the living and the departed within a mythical setting deeply rooted in Nigerian culture.
