ABSTRACT
This study examined the linguistics effects of exogamy on language vitality in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The study focused on linguistic exogamy and language vitality and the people of Egor Local Government Area. To guide the study, research questions were raised that was set under the statement of problem. the study adopted a survey design and a simple random sampling technique to obtain a sample of one hundred people in Egor Local Government Area. A questionnaire was administered in response to the research questions raised which was approved by the researcher’s supervisor and another expert in the Department of Linguistics Studies. The data obtained was analyze using simple percentages and proportion. The findings of the study revealed that Edo language is currently being endangered as a result of language contact in the exogamous homes. Edo language is being endangered as it is being competed with among other languages due to the effect of exogamy in Egor Local Government. Edo language is not taking its proper ground as the language one (L1) where the proper Edo language is spoken in Egor Local Government Area. Based on these findings, the researcher recommended among other things that there should be a proper Edo language policy by the government in exogamous home in Egor Local Government Area. Also, every parent that speak Edo language should try as much as possible to enforce the Edo language to both their married partners and their children so as for them to be able to express themselves to people who understands only Edo language in Egor Local Government Area.
