ABSTRACT

     This study examines the linguistic effect of exogamy on language vitality. The instrument used for collecting data was the questionnaire which was a 100 in number and was distributed to the twelve wards of Oredo local government area of Edo state, and it was analyzed with the simple percentage method.

       The study was based on the assumption that the practice of exogamy in Oredo local government area has affected the vitality of Edo language in that area. From the data collected and analyzed, it was concluded that in Oredo local government area many of the homes are indeed exogamous and this has resulted in low vitality of Edo language in that area, that is to say Edo language is not being used extensively inside and outside the home for all topics and purposes by all generations.
