ABSTRACT

Cult languages have been used and are still used by different individuals or a group of people in conducting their private or secret deeds. Aba is a terminally endangerd cult language used by Awka men in the past in conducting their business associated with the Agbala address, in slave trade practices and other forms of cheating. The interference of the colonial administrators and the introduction of western edcuatioin stopped the above mentioned activities thereby endangering the cult language. This work aims at providing more lexical data which to repregnt this cult language and also to carry out a linguisitic study on the phonology and morphonology of the Aba language. The study reveals that the cult language shares some phonological and morphological featues with the Awka Igbo and this suggests that the language is Awka Igbo based. Tonal modulation, stylistic decision, word inversion and ascribing meanings arbitrarily were discovered as the key strategies exploited by these Awka men of the past to enshroud their conversation in secrecy. This work will be a good reference material to feature researcher who desire to carry out further studies on the Aba cult language.
