Abstract

Many researchers all over the world have come to accept the universality of graffiti writing. This work examines the graffiti character of university of Benin student samples. These samples can be found in doors, toilets blackboards and other obscure places hence, the employment of pragmatics to the analysis of data for better comprehension. Some graffiti samples involve drawings and crude inscriptions hence, the employment of semiotics for better interpretation of such signs.

The findings from this sample concludes that student graffiti are meant to influence the decoder, affect his decision and perception towards a particular opinion, and it generally integrates for mass participation especially when questions are asked and suggestions are involved. Most importantly student graffiti consists of verdictives, behavitives, commisives, and excersitive act types which accounts for the perlocutionary effect of such utterances on the decoder. This project achieved its aim by the integration of J.L Austin’s Speech acts and Peirce Theory of Semiosis.
