ABSTRACT

The study investigated the knowledge, of the risk factors and preventive behaviour of cardiovascular diseases amongst undergraduates of the University of Benin.

Therefore, in order to achieve the objectives of the study, three research question were raised. In investigating this study, the descriptive survey design was adopted. The population of the study comprises of 7369 undergraduates students of the Faculty of Education, University of Benin, A sample size of 105 respondents  and a simple random sampling technique was used. A structured questionnaire designed was the instrument used for the study. The data collected were analysed using frequency counts.

Based on findings from the data collected and analyzed, it was therefore concluded that students of the University of Benin exhibit a moderate level of knowledge regarding the risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases. Many are aware that certain lifestyle choices can increase their risk, and some take proactive measures to prevent these diseases. However, despite this awareness, there is a gap between knowledge and action, as a considerable number of students continue to engage in behaviors that heighten their risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. The consumption of sugary and high-salt foods, frequent intake of energy drinks, and smoking or exposure to tobacco products are still prevalent among a significant portion of the respondents. While some students take preventive measures, such as managing their blood sugar and cholesterol levels and avoiding smoking, the adoption of other critical behaviors remains inadequate. It was therefore recommended that the university should implement regular health education campaigns to enhance students' knowledge of cardiovascular diseases, their risk, students should be encouraged to undergo routine health screenings, the University should promote physical fitness by providing accessible recreational facilities, policies should be put in place to limit the availability of unhealthy food options such as high-salt, high-sugar, and fast foods within campus cafeterias while promoting healthier alternatives like fruits and vegetables, awareness campaigns should be intensified to educate students on the dangers of smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke, students should be educated on the potential health risks of excessive energy drink consumption, and dietitians should be available,student-led health clubs and peer mentoring programs should be established, the institution should adopt policies that prioritize student health.
