ABSTRACT
Failure to adequately decontaminate patient equipment will increase the risk of transmission of infection between patients and may contribute to the development of hospital-acquired infections. Full obedience towards the acceptable decontamination process by healthcare workers is required. The aim of this study was to determine the use of decontamination as a sterilizing process among nurses in Edo State specialist hospital Benin City, Edo State. A descriptive research design was used, convenient sampling method was used to select a total of 117 nurses that participated in the study and a well-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Results from this study revealed that majority 56.4% of nurses had a good level of knowledge, 38.5% had a fair level of knowledge while the remaining 5.1% had a poor level of knowledge on the use of decontamination as a sterilizing process, majority of the nurses 60.7% had a positive level of attitude while the remaining 39.3% had a negative attitude towards the use of decontamination as a sterilizing process and the level of practice on the use of decontamination as a sterilizing process among the nurses; majority of the nurses 53% had a high level of practice, 31.6% had a moderate level of practice while the remaining 15.4% had a low level of practice. Therefore, more education on decontamination could enhance the current nurses’ decontamination practice
