ABSTRACT
The study sought to investigate knowledge and attitude of parents towards early childhood education as a course of study in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. Early childhood education is new to her university curriculum and often times we see when children are given early childhood education as a course of study or choose to study ECE parebts seem to pose a negative attitude towards it, therefore it is imperative to carry out this study. In order to effectively carry out this study three research questions was raised. To examine......., this is stud would be significant to stakeholders in education, parents and researchers. The study is centered on the knowledge and attitude of parents towards early childhood education as a course of study for their children however it is delimited to Oredo Local Government Area. It was contextually examined properly. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and the population of the study consisted 60 parents whose children are currently enrolled into the early childhood program in the University of Benin. The research Instrument was a questionnaire which was validated and the reliability was 0.82. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation for research question one and two, while the univariate statistic test was used for research question three. The findings that emerged revealed that the level of parent knowledge and attitude towards early childhood education in Oredo Local Government Area was was high. In addition, parents with higher socioeconomic status tend to be more informed and knowledgeable about early childhood education compared to parents who had low socio-economic status. It was further revealed that parents' culture was the most predominant reason why most parents don't consider early childhood education as a suitable course of study for their children which was followed by their level of education and religion. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that outreach programs targeting parents from lower socio-economic backgrounds to ensure equitable access to information on early childhood education should be employed, culturally sensitive educational outreach programs that align with local cultural practices and attitudes toward early childhood education should also be employed.
