ABSTRACT
This research examines the place of marriage rites in the context marriage been a universally acknowledged and very important institution in human society, as it is foundation of group life and a requirement for human survival. The methodology adopted was textual and contextual analysis, with secondary source from journals, textbooks, relevant to the course of research. This work centers on Marriage rites, as it relates and hits across the events relating to marriage, the taboos, the widowhood, in the context of Igbo extraction, taking cognizance and backup from Zulu's Sofola Wedlock of the God's, using the play to bring out the agony women pass through when it comes to forced and arrange marriage in ancient Igbo marriage. Most students of Nigeria drama and literature are not aware of the playwrights Zulu Sofola advocacy for women in the society, the study therefore stand to bridge the gap, and hope in enriching the existing work of Zulu's Sofola drama. The playwright is a product of the society and thus mirrors the ill happenings in the society, and it further opines the researcher to dig into her works as it also relates to marriage rites, as it affects women and the society.
