ABSTRACT

One of the most important and contentious factors contributing to the Nigeria-Biafra war, often referred to as the Nigeria Civil War, being prolonged was the internalization of the conflict, in which external forces meddled in the battle. To win the conflict, both sides required the assistance of outside countries. When a region declares itself a state, it does not need a legal process to validate it; instead, it only needs the resources to defend itself and recognition from other states in the international system. Nigeria, on the other hand, wanted military aid and nothing else, while Biafra wanted recognition from outsiders. Had foreign countries not intervened, the conflict would not have escalated to its current level of intensity. "The Nigerian situation would not have escalated into a civil war if other nations and their citizens, particularly the developed ones, had left Nigeria alone. Ojukwu might not have made the final decision to declare the Eastern Region an independent state of Biafra if he had not had the guarantee and promise of material and moral assistance as well as open recognition.
