ABSTRACT
This study examines and analyses Igbo personal names from the semantic and pragmatic perspective, the major objective of this work is to examine the semantic and pragmatic structure of some personal names in Igbo language. This study seeks to ascertain the semantic processes and the internal structure of the meaning of Igbo names. A sample of 150 names were generated and analysed. Both male and female were used for the analysis. The data was obtained from a list of names in schools, market places, religious organisations and some Igbo language speaking villages. Oral interviews were conducted with native speakers and indigenes of some villages in other to get clarification and understanding as it is concerned with the meaning of names. The data cut across standard and dialects Igbo names. The selected names were also grouped according to their forms in the following lexical order; noun- noun phrasal names, noun- verb phrasal names, noun- verb phrasal complement/ sentential names and interrogation/ injunction names. The semantic and pragmatic research was oversaw by assimilating the context into semantics context. The data shows that Igbo names structurally fall into three broad catergories, Lexical categories, Phrasal and Sentential. For igbo language naming, a name is not just a personal label,means of identification but an expression of cultural values, nature ,power, blessings as well as prophesying into the child's life.it is also the situation and circumstances surrounding the birth of the child as well as the parents life acquaintances and perspective of life.
