ABSTRACT
This study probes the impact which Western Television Programmes have on the Nigerian child. The introduction of Western Television programmes in Nigeria has gone a long way in influencing the cultural values of the Nigerian child. The research posits that the current trends in the child's development in Nigeria as observed among University of Benin Consultancy Primary School Children in Edo State is significantly associated with their perception of Western Culture and exposure to Western Television programmes. The assumption that foreign media content has direct powerful effects is shared by The Social Learning Theory. This is achieved through the process of acculturation, through such characteristics explained as “indigenizing what is foreign, idealizing what is indigenous and nationalizing what is sectional. Children learn by watching, imitating and assimilating. The researcher employed the face-to-face interview method in the gathering of primary data,. The researcher picked six respondents sample; i.e a teacher is from each of the six classes, primary one to six, University of Benin Consultancy Primary School. Simple random technique was used to pick two teachers. The descriptive method of analysis (Qualitative Analysis) was employed. Children are influenced by their environment. And environment doesn’t just consist of the physical one. Parents focus more on keeping their children away from bad friends and influence and may neglect the influence of the kind of western television programmes their children are exposed to. The mind is a very great tool and should be guarded, in this case the mind of the children as they are still fragile. The nature of the western programmes they are exposed to can affect their future positively or negatively, therefore it is important that parental guidance should be applied. Therefore there should be close monitoring by parents and guardians on the kind of Western programmes these children are exposed to.
