ABSTRACT

Important ideas and information may now be communicated quickly over and outside of national borders and boundaries through digital communication media, which has become an essential and effective model in this regard. This study examines how the Twitter ban has affected the right to free speech in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. It requires a detailed analysis of the Twitter prohibition. Twitter use was prohibited by the Nigerian government from 5 June 2021 until 13 January 2022. Under the pretense of national security, both industrialized and developing nations have recently taken drastic steps to impose internet restriction. Fortunately, internet censorship has shown to be a severe danger to internet freedom, especially the freedom of expression, according to many liberal and human rights campaigners. Investigating free expression in the digital age in light of Nigeria's Twitter ban is the primary objective of this study. Additionally, it offers criticism of Twitter as a medium for communication, particularly for city of Benin company owners. It also questions how freedom of expression is restricted in the context of social media. It also focuses on laws pertaining to the right to expression on a national and international level. According to the report, policymakers should uphold laws that are compliant with international commitments relating to human rights in order to show that they appreciate the flexibility and ideals of the Internet. The study also suggested that the government refrain from telling stories that contradict these values. The report suggested that civil society organizations take part in creative public awareness efforts about federal government censorship.
