This study was carried out to investigate the influence of teacher’s professional training on students’ academic achievement in Biology in Egor local government area. Five (5) research questions and four (3) hypotheses was stated to guide the study and the descriptive survey research design was adopted. A review of some related literature was carried out.
One hundred (100) public Secondary School Biology teachers in Egor local government area were sampled for the study. The instrument used for gathering data from the selected sample was a questionnaire. The reliability of the student’s questionnaire was established at 0.77 Using the Cronbach's Alpha technique. the data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics in form of percentage, mean and t-test.
Findings of this study revealed that; There is significant relationship between teachers professional training and students academic achievement in Biology The revealed that the majority of the teachers' in these sampled schools at the time of the study were qualified with NCE, B.Ed, B.sc and M.Sc (PGDE). There is no relationship between the academic achievement of students taught by long serving and short serving teachers. There is significant relationship between teachers area of specialization and students’ academic achievement in Biology. On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that the kind of teacher education required must be the one that equip the teacher with the necessary specialized knowledge and skills required to facilitate effective teaching and learning in senior secondary schools in Nigeria.
