ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effect of teachers’ motivation on the academic performance of secondary students in Biology in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The objectives of the study was to investigate the major benefits of implementing motivational programs to improve the job performances of teachers, the extent to which teacher’s motivation affects students learning outcome amongst biology students, the major teachers demotivators, the extent to which dealing with the demotivators affect potential teachers, the measures to be implemented to motivate teachers, the measures to be taken to bring back quality teachers who has abandoned the teaching profession for a more rewarding job and the ways teachers can motivate their students. The design used for the study was descriptive survey design. The population for the study is fifty (50) biology teachers from a total of twenty (20) senior secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo state. The research sample consists of twenty (20) biology teachers from the twenty selected schools (both public and private) and was sampled using random sampling techniques. Seven (7) questions were raised, examined and answered respectively in order to actualize the purpose of the study. Data was collected through the use of questionnaires. A descriptive statistics method which consisted of the mean score analysis, frequency and simple percentage was used to analyze the data that was obtained. xii The findings from the study revealed that motivation has a very significant role to play towards the actualization of educational success. It was found that teachers who are well motivated could meet up their needs thus creating a better condition for a better job performance. Biology teachers who were duly compensated delivered their instruction content seriously. They consider what goes on their classroom, among their students and even encourage them thereby creating a good learning environment in Egor Local Government Area. While undermotivated biology teachers in this area delivers his subject content in a care free manner. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that efforts should be made by the government, educational facilitators, private school owners as well as parents to motivate teachers. A scheme could be set up to cater for teachers’ need across all area of discipline because motivated teachers produce motivated learners
