ABSTRACT

Many educationists have observed that a good teacher-student relationship facilitate teaching and enhances students participation in the teaching/ learning processes. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the Influence of Teacher-Student Relationship in the Learning Process of Secondary School in Ovia North East Local Government of Edo State.

             A descriptive survey research design was employed in this study. Four(4) research questions were raised to guide the study. The target population of the study consist of six thousand and seventy six (6076) in twenty five (25) public secondary schools in Ovia Northeast local government area of Edo state, with sample of two hundred (180) respondents which consist of one  hundred and forty (150) teachers and sixty (30) students from five (5) and this sample was selected using the cluster sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The questionnaire was validated by the researcher's supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Educational Foundation; while the test- re test reliability method was adopted to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation.

The study reveals that both teachers and students that teacher -student relationship influence the learning process of students because good teacher-student relationships can positively impact students behavior in the classroom, reduce the rate of school dropout , reduce risk of negative behavioral outcomes, can create strong bond between student and teacher, and can build self esteem of students, the factors influencing teacher student relationship on the learning process of students include; Educational qualification, communication, experience of a teacher , subject matter to be taught , and learning environment of a teacher, the benefits of positive teacher student relationship on the learning process of students is that teacher-student relationship promote academic success of student, helps to develop self-worth of student, promote professional skills of teacher, improves the student mental health and build student confidence, the measures should be put in place to facilitate a positive teacher student relationship include; consistent communication is the most viral , creating an open learning environment where different opinions are equally respected, mutual respect and trust, focusing equally on all students in class, focusing equally on all students in class are measures to facilitate a positive teacher-student relationship.
