ABSTRACT
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is an initiative that aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills for vocational and technical education students. This study focuses on the influence of SIWES on the academic performance of vocational and technical education students at the University of Benin, Benin City. By examining the relationship between participation in SIWES and students' academic achievements, this research intends to identify the potential benefits of this scheme.
Using a mixed-method approach, the study employed both quantitative and qualitative methods to collect data from participants. The sample population consisted of students from various vocational and technical education programs at the University of Benin. A structured questionnaire was administered to collect quantitative data, while focus group discussions and interviews were conducted to gather qualitative insights. The results of the study indicate a positive correlation between participation in SIWES and academic performance. Students who actively participated in SIWES demonstrated a better understanding of course concepts and improved problem-solving skills. Additionally, the experiential learning opportunities provided by SIWES enabled students to contextualize their knowledge, leading to enhanced academic outcomes.
However, the study also identified several challenges faced by students participating in SIWES, such as inadequate supervision, a lack of industry-relevant training facilities, and insufficient financial support. These obstacles need to be addressed to optimize the benefits of the scheme and further enhance students' academic performance.
