ABSTRACT

This study examined the influence of strike actions by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on the academic performance of University of Benin students, Benin City, Edo State. In order to actualize this aim, five research questions were raised to guide the study. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study and a structured questionnaire was used for data collection. One hundred (100) respondents were randomly selected from the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Arts respectively for the study. Data collected were analyzed using Tables and simple percentage. Result from the study showed that a very large percentage of the respondents agreed that ASUU strike has had a negative influence on the academic performance of University of Benin student. The study further shows that students show little or no interest in studying when they are at home due to the strike and therefore lose motivation to learn and this has led to the poor performance of University students. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the students’ academic pursuit should be put into consideration first and measures should be put on ground by government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) etc to check incessant industrial action in the educational system.
