ABSTRACT
Sports psychology interventions play a crucial role in enhancing team cohesion and overall performance in competitive sports. This study explores the impact of psychological strategies such as goal setting, visualization, mindfulness, self-talk, and team-building exercises on athletes’ mental resilience, motivation, and group dynamics. The research highlights how these interventions foster trust, communication, and shared objectives among team members, ultimately leading to improved performance outcomes. Through a review of relevant literature and case studies, this study examines the effectiveness of sports psychology interventions in various team sports. Findings indicate that teams that integrate psychological training experience higher levels of cooperation, reduced conflict, and enhanced adaptability under pressure. Additionally, the research considers challenges such as limited access to sports psychologists, lack of awareness, and cultural perceptions affecting the implementation of mental skills training, particularly in developing sports environments like Nigeria. The study concludes that sports psychology interventions are essential in modern athletic training, contributing significantly to both individual and team success. Recommendations include increased investment in psychological support for athletes, training programs for coaches, and further research on context-specific interventions to optimize performance in competitive sports.
