ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of socio-economic factors on undergraduate athlete’s training and performance. Literature review covered relevant text and documents relevant to the topic. The study adopted a descriptive research design. The population of interest consists of students athletes in University of Benin. A sample size of 100 was selected using the purposive Sampling Technique. Data was collected using structured questionnaires. The data was analyzed using simple percentage. The data was presented using tables. The study found that lack of incentives for undergraduate athletes, lack of allowance and income brings about unseriousness and impede training and performance. The study also found that poor state of training facilities and poor access to training facilities can lead to poor training and performance. the study therefore recommended amongst others; good coaching and support group for undergraduate athletes, undergraduate athletes should be given access to training facilities and the training facilities should be put to state of the art.
