ABSTRACT
This study examines the influence of socio-economic background of parents on the academic performance of their children in secondary schools in Benin City Edo state. Four purpose of the study were raised to guide the study
Several journal and books by different authors were used in the review of literature pertaining to socio-economic background of parents on the academic performance of their children. Questionnaires were used as the research instrument in conducting the research while the information was collected from two hundred (200) accessible respondents for the study. The data collected was analyzed using simple percentage, means, standard deviation.
The study concludes that educational status of parents in most of the schools in Egor Local Government Area has an influence on students’ academic achievement, lastly the study recommend that since poor socio-economic status of parents have negative effects influence on students’ academic performance and important variable to influence students’ academic achievement and therefore, parents unemployment level should be recommended. Poor students should be provided with scholarships, free books and other stationary. In addition, it is recommended that government should take steps to raise the welfare of the parents.
