ABSTRACT

This study was designed to ascertain the influence of social networking sites on the academic performance of senior secondary school students in history in Esan South East Local government Area of Edo State.Three research questions were formulated and fifteen (15) questions were administered to the respondents in which was to collect response from the respondents which was done through quantitative survey

The population of this study includes senior secondary school students in Esan south east local government area of Edo state.A total of 100 respondents were sampled from this study.The instrument to be used in this study is the questionnaire titled "The influence of Social networking sites on the academic performance of senior secondary school students in history questionnaire (ISNSAPSSSHQ)" This section also has a total of 15 questions and the type of response expected is that of close ended questionnaire option. It has two sections Viz section A and section B.Section A deals with the personal data such as name of school,sex,age of students and grade/class. The section B was based on the research questions formulated for this study and the issues raised in the literature review.

The simple random sampling Tecnique was used to select respondents from the four(4) sampled senior secondary school.The instrument used in this study was the questionnaire.Data was analyzed using percentage and standard deviation analysis.Based on that analysis of the data the following findings were drawn concerning the research questions: WhatsApp and Facebook, Instagram, Tweeter, Telegram, TikTok was identified as various networking sites used by students,the extent in which social networking sites has affected the performance of students in history which is both positively and negatively and finally the influence of Facebook, WhatsApp and TikTok on students performance in history and their attitude towards assignment.

Based on these findings,the following were recommended: Students should create an online study groups or forums where they can collaborate and share information with their peers.Teachers can also incorporate social media into lessons by sharing relevant articles, videos or historical accounts that spark discussions and critical thinking among Students.Also parents should also be involved in their child's use of social networking sites by setting guidelines and limitations on screen time, monitoring online activity,and encouraging responsible digital behavior.school authorities can also play a role in promoting responsible use of social networking sites by providing education on digital citizenship.
