ABSTRACT

The media can be used as an instrument to either build or destroy human society. Therefore, the researcher examined the Influence of social media platforms on social mobilization and political participation amongst undergraduate students. The study is limited to the students of the University of Benin particularly those in Ekehuan campus. The objectives of the research were to ascertain the level of use of social media by undergraduate students of Uniben, to determine the influence of social media on undergraduate students of Uniben and lastly to determine how effective social media was in Promoting the ENDSARS protest. Adopting Survey method as the research method, the researcher employed a 14item questionnaire which was distributed to a hundred respondents. The stratified and simple random sampling technique was employed for this study. The findings from the data collected and analyzed were Presented in with the aid of frequency tables and simple percentages. The findings revealed that a lot of people agree that social media is effective in disseminating information, a majority of the audience makes use of social media and are influenced by it. The study concludes that although social media has its negative sides, it is imperative to amplify the positive sides as well. The study was able to prove that social media is not just a bunch of platforms to have fun but also a tool that can be used to address a major issue in the nation such as police brutality.
