ABSTRACT
The study investigated the influence of social media on the mental health of Nigerian adolescents in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and answered.
The descriptive survey research methods was adopted for the study. The sample size for the study was made up of 100 students. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled “Influence of Social Media on the Mental Health of Nigerian Adolescents Questionnaire”. In analyzing the data, the researcher made use of frequency count and percentages to compute the findings from the research.
The findings from the study include that social media significantly influences the mental health of adolescents in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. It was concluded that social media significantly impacts adolescents’ mental health with both positive and negative effects. However, factors such as age and gender did not appear to create significant differences in its impact. The study suggested the need for general interventions to promote healthier social media use among all adolescents, rather than targeting specific demographic groups.
