ABSTRACT
The study investigated the influence of skill acquisition programmes on youth restiveness in Ovia North East Local Government Area. The researcher was interested in finding out the main reasons for the high rate of Youth Restiveness in Ovia North East Local Government Area. In doing this, five research questions were raised to guide the study. A total sample of 100 respondents drawn through a simple random technique was used for the study. The descriptive survey method was adopted for the research design and thus the data for the study were collected with the use of a questionnaire. After experts’ validation of the instrument, it was pilot-tested for reliability. The reliability coefficient was determined through a test retest technique and it came up to 0.75 which was quite high for rational decision. The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics specifically simple percentage and the mean score analysis.
The major findings of the study revealed that unemployment, illiteracy, lack of social amenities and entrepreneurship skills are the causes of Youth Restiveness in Ovia North East Local Government Area. The study concluded that there is a high rate of Youth Restiveness in Ovia North East Local Government Area and that the Youths can only be productive when they participate actively in economic activities.
The study proffered a number of recommendations which include the need for the government and other stakeholders to create more policies to address vocational education, provision of stipends to youths who acquire skills to help them start up, provide post training support to help them sustain their business as well as develop programmes that are technologically inclined in order to attract more participation from the youths.
