ABSTRACT
The research was conducted to find out the influence of skill acquisition programme on socioeconomic development of Ovia North East Local Government Area, Edo State. A sample population of one hundred women in Ovia North East Local Government Area, Edo State was used in the research. The instrument used in carrying out this study was a structured questionnaire. After careful analysis using frequency and percentage, the study revealed that Tailoring and hair dressing, styling and makeup have the highest mean value which indicates that tailoring and hairdressing is mostly available in Ovia North East local government area. The result showed that that women participated in skill acquisition to learn a functional skill that will help them, improve their economic status. Skill acquisition has made the women self-reliant. From the study, it was gathered that challenges acquired by Ovia North East women included that the women found it difficult to get loans to boost their business from financial institutions and that the women do not have enough funds to start a business according to the skills they acquired. It is recommended that skill acquisition programmes should be more focused on by the government through creation of additional technical and vocational schools in order to accommodate and train people in different fields of technical and vocational education as they are presently under represented in the country, Technical and vocational education will be popularized to embrace the advancement of the girl child and acquisition of skills for girls should be encouraged, motivated and elevated above the acquisition of mere certificates.
