THE INFLUENCE OF SEXUAL BEHAVIOURS AMONGST UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY ON THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of sexual behavior amongst undergraduate students on their academics performance using the prestigious university of Benin, Benin City as a caser study. The purpose of the study was to Examining the concept of sexuality and how it affects students performance in school, Examining the factors that may influence students involvement in sexual behaviors that are risky to both their health and their academic also Evaluating the possible effects of sexually transmitted infection to students health and education and lastly, The role of the school, parents, media and the government to improve students academic performances.

Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for the study and a simple random sample technique was used in selecting the the sample population for the study from various faculties in the university of Benin. The population of the study was all the students of all facilities in the university of Benin with a comprising number of 45000 students. Questionnaire was shared to 3822 students from 5 different facilities im the university of Benin, Benin , City, Edo State. The response of the respondents were analyzed using the mean and standard deviation.

The following were found during the course of the analysis. It was discovered that it is possible for a student to balance sexual activities with academic activities.The findings further revealed there are  factors that influences sexual behaviors amongst undergraduates students which are   peer pressure, family background, personal beliefs and attitudes, media, and educational programmes. These play a big role in influencing the sexual behaviours of students. The finding also revealed  that students could have  poor academic performance because of their Lack of effective study skills and time management, procrastinating, lack of relevant materials and mental health conditions can lead to poor academic performance. It was recommended that University Authorities, Government Agency (the ministry of education) and  other Ngos  form an integration  to design and implement comprehensive educational programs that enhance students' understanding of sexuality education and necessary laws he established to control sexual relations around the college environment.

Good counselling centers to assist students should be established across all faculties of the university to help improve the mental health of undergraduate students.
