ABSTRACT
This study examined the SWOC (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges) related to the effectiveness of radio in disseminating information about forests in order to increase the impact of radio broadcasts in the fight against illicit lumbering in Nigerian forests. Focus group discussions (FGDs) were held with respondents in the study area as part of the data collection process, which also included interviewing key informants, distributing questionnaires to the general public, and analysing the content of a number of programmes produced and broadcast by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) radio. The study found that, to a certain extent, radio offers certain chances for the straightforward distribution of information about forest conservation in an effort to persuade communities to adopt the desired action. On the other hand, the study discovered that the power of the radio to effectively influence citizens to inform the general public on illegal lumbering was constrained by factors like poor packaging of forest information, a lack of participation from rural-based citizens in the programmes, and poverty among community members.
