ABSTRACT
This study examined the Influence of Practical Work on the Teaching and Learning of some Concepts in Biology, in public Senior Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The study employed a survey research design. The population of the study comprises 34 teachers from 17 public Senior Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government of Edo state.
The study made use of purposive sampling technique to select 17 public Senior Secondary Schools, 42 teachers, to make up the sample for the study. A research instrument (questionnaire) titled the “Influence of Practical Work on the Teaching and Learning of some Concepts in Biology”, was used for data collection. The questionnaire consists of two sections, sections A and section B. Section A sought personal data of the respondents such as name of school, sex, qualifications and age, section B asked questions concerning the Influence of Practical Work on the Teaching and Learning of some Concepts in Biology. The instrument validity was done by the researcher's supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology[CIT], faculty of Education. Data collected was analyzed using simple percentage and frequency table.
The findings of the study shows that practical work has significant effect in the Teaching and Learning of some Concepts in Biology. It was therefore concluded that practical work has great and positive influence on student's learning of Biology, which therefore increases their academic performance in Biology. On the basis of the findings and conclusion it was recommended that,government through the Ministry of Education should conduct a periodic review of laboratory facilities, with a view to update them. It was also recommended that teachers should always engage students in practical work as it would help improve their performance in Biology.
