ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to investigate the influence of pidgin English on Nigerian students English performance. It also attempted to ascertain whether Nigeria pidgin English has any effect on the student’s academic performance in University of Benin; assess whether the use of Nigerian pidgin English has a discernible impact on the overall linguistic development of students in educational settings; and examined the influence of exposure to Nigerian pidgin English in informal settings; including peer interactions and media, on the English Language skills of Nigerian students within the formal educational context. Three research questions was raised to guide the study. A descriptive survey was used for the study. The population of the study consisted of all 236 for 300 level student and 176 for 400 level students of the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The study adopted the simple random sampling technique. The data collected were analyzed with the use of mean and standard deviation statistics. Nigerian pidgin was frequently used in daily conversation. Based on this finding, it was recommended that engagement with some teachers should be in the minimal especially as they promote the use of pidgin English among some students; Teacher should be encouraged to use a student-centered approach in their teaching so that the students will be encouraged to explore the use of language in a friendly environment. And that teachers in tertiary institutions as well as English language teachers in secondary schools need to acquire the requisite knowledge of Nigeria Pidgin and its negative effect whenever it interferes with English language.
