ABSTRACT
The study investigated the influence of peer group pressure on the academic performance of secondary school students in Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State. The design adopted for this study was the descriptive survey method. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide this study: What are the factors responsible for students’ indulgence in negative peer group pressure? What category of students are easily susceptible to negative peer influence in secondary schools? What are some behaviours common to students who are affected by negative peer group pressure in Ughelli South Local Government Area? What are possible ways to heal students who are negatively affected by peer group pressure? The population of the study consisted of all secondary school students in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. The sample size for this study was a total number of one hundred (100) students who were selected using the simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain data from respondents which was tagged, “Questionnaire on the Influence of Peer Group Pressure on the Academic Performance of Secondary School Students (QIPGPAPSSS)”. Data collected from the survey was statistically analyzed. After analysis, results were displayed on tables showing frequencies and percentages of responses.
