ABSTRACT
The study examined the influence of parenting styles on adolescents behavioural pattern among undergraduate students in University of Benin. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and examined. The sample size for the study was made up of one hundred and twenty students. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Cronbach Alpha was used to determine the reliability of the instrument and Cronbach coefficient of .837 was obtained. Total sample size of one hundred and twenty were used for the study. An analysis of data was done using mean and standard deviation.
The findings from the study parenting styles such as authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful influence the social and emotional behaviours of undergraduate students at the University of Benin, parenting styles influence undergraduate students in mitigating and indulging certain risky behaviours such as substance use behaviour, sexual risk behaviour, and delinquent behaviour. It was recommended that parents should be continuously involved with children so that adolescents may be prevented from committing crimes and associating themselves with law-breaking actions and Parents and their adolescents should also learn to maintain a cordial relationship and interactions to guide against family conflict, depression, aggression, anxieties and worries on the developing person and parent at home school and society. Parents also should be good models for their children.
