ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of parenting styles on the academic performance of adolescents in Oredo Local Government Area. Prior research has shown that parenting style has a significant impact on adolescent academic performance, with parenting styles such as authoritative, authoritarian, and neglectful having varying influence on academic outcomes.
To investigate this issue, the researcher employed a descriptive survey research design with a correlational approach, surveying a sample of 200 secondary school students using a questionnaire.
The results of the regression analysis revealed that authoritative parenting style has a significant positive influence on adolescent academic performance, authoritarian parenting style also has a significant positive influence on adolescent academic performance, and neglectful parenting style has a significant but relatively limited impact on adolescent academic performance, while collectively, authoritative, authoritarian, and neglectful parenting styles play a significant role influencing adolescent academic performance with coefficient of .066. These findings underscore the importance of considering the broader context of parenting practices in understanding academic performance among adolescents, and the implications of these results for the development of policies and programs aimed at supporting adolescent academic success are discussed.
